Study Club: Message from Director

June 18, 2015

Dear Colleagues:

The Northern California Dental Forum is now entering our 24th year as a study club and would like to take the opportunity to invite you to join our group. We are a close group of friends who have chosen to meet on a regular basis (usually monthly) to improve our abilities to diagnose and treatment plan complex perio/pros cases and deal with multidisciplinary cases in a collaborative and collegial fashion. The most beneficial aspect of our comprehensive case management "curriculum" is a combination of clinical sessions which consists of evaluating and treatment planning patients as a group in my office and problem solving sessions designed to have members bring cases or aspects of cases which are clinical in nature or administrative problems/dilemmas which members cannot find answers to on their own. Our membership for the 2014-2015 year was made up of 15 general practitioners plus advisors. Whether you're a relatively recent grad or the most seasoned veteran I GUARANTEE you will get many pearls from your association with this group of excellent clinicians, as well as make some great life-long friends.

Our advisory board which attends all club programs consists of Restorative advisors (Drs. Bingson Wong, and George Chen) with guest Prosthodontist lecturers, Orthodontic advisor (Dr. Steve Anderson), Endodontic advisor (Dr. Bob Sharp), Oral surgical advisor (Dr. Margaret Delmore), Periodontal advisor (Dr. Mark Zablotsky), and Laboratory advisor (Bob Penrod). Finally, we are very excited to welcome back Melinda Heryford, a local practice management expert, back to our group to help with facilitation of some meetings (i.e. Team/Business related meetings).

Guest lecturers this year include: On Friday, October 16th, Dr. Michael Cohen will present "Impediments to Comprehensive Care" workshop for Doctors and Hygienists. Michael is the visionary and "The Godfather" of our SSC network (and has practiced Periodontics in Seattle for 40 years). The concept of our study club education is Michael's brainchild. He is the reason we do much of this the way we do, and my "Big Brother". On Friday, November 6th, Dr. Richard Akin (an OMFS from Baton Rouge, LA) will present a morning on "Provisionals: A Surgeon's Perspective". On Thursday evening, 2/25/16 Ms. Catrice Opichka RDA will present to Doctors and Hygienists, "Treating the Cancer Patient: Improving the Journey Through Patient Care." Our final program of the year will be our 4th Regional retreat featuring the return of Dr. Tal Morr, a Prosthodontist from Miami Florida, who was a featured lecturer this past year. Tal will present 3 half days on the weekend of 5/20/16, at the Intercontinental Clement Hotel in Monterey. He will build on and reinforce concepts of complete diagnosis and the use of the entire team to treat complex cases, and give everyday clinical pearls. All will enjoy both his approach to treating patients as well as his presentation style!!!

And as always, the backbone of our study club curriculum will be the clinical and problem solving sessions. These are interactive programs for us to examine patients or records of patients to discuss their diagnoses and possible treatment options. Clinical sessions are where patients are present with their records for evaluation and treatment planning evenings, and problem solving sessions are records reviews that members bring for discussions and advice from the other members and advisors.

We provide California CE credits and expect to give up to 30 hours for our academic year. Our club is a participating club in both the Seattle Study club network and the International Congress of Oral Implantology. As such some of our programming may dovetail into these groups' programming.

Study club dues for next year will be $1,850.00 and will cover all study club programming except for the January Annual Seattle Study Club Symposium on The Big Island of Hawaii, A Symphony of Science including: The Science of Dentistry, The Science of Health & Well-Being, The Science of Business Management, and The Science of Competitions. The conference dates are 1/26/16-1/30/16. Not only is this the finest quality program you will EVER attend, it is top notch for peripheral programming for spouses and/or kids. This program is always the best you could possibly want to attend from all perspectives (academic, social, and entertainment). We should have the registration materials here for our kickoff program.

Should you have any questions about the study club or want to speak with any of our members or advisors about our group please don't hesitate to give us a call. We are always looking for quality oriented practitioners to join our group.

We are looking forward to your participation in our unique group. Click Here for a copy of our schedule for the year (minus a few surprises). Have a great summer and we hope to see you in the fall.

Sincerely,
Mark H. Zablotsky, D.D.S., Study Club Director
